Tirta Empul Temple


Tirta Empul temple is a holy spring water temple located in … ,Tampak Siring subdistrict, Gianyar regency. It is about 40 km eastward from Denapasar city. It is set in the dale and encircled by the hill. In the west side of this temple, there is an Indonesian palace founded by the first president. The name of Tirta Empul is loaded in an inscription kept at Sakenan Temple, Manukiaya village, about 3 km from Tirta Empul. In this inscription, Tirta Empul is named Tirta Ri Air Hampul and then it changed into Tirta Hampul and finally become Tirta Empul Tempel. Tirta Empul means the water emerge or the holy pool whose water emerges from the land.

The wellspring emerges from the land and iit is believed that it is the infinite creation. According to the history, this water source is arranged and sanctified by the king Indra Jaya Singha Warmadewa, in the year 882 Caka ((60 M). He has given the name Tirta Ri Air Hampul. The data is taken from an inscription located at Sakenan Temple.

Besides the above epigraphy data, in Tirta Empul Temple it is also found the archeology omission like Colossus Yoni, Arca Lion, Tapasana and Tirta Empul pool. According to papyrus of Usana Bali narrated that Tirta empul is created by Bhatara Indra (Sun Deity) when bearing arms against the King where his palace is located in Bedulu countryside. He is known as a very miraculous king because he can lose or appear suddenly. Therefore, he is named Mayadenawa.Because of his miracle, he becomes arrogant and expresses himself as a god. Mayadenawa king owns an assistant called Kalawong. They prohibit the people to do the yadnya (offering to the god) so that natural disaster often happens. Finally, Bhatara Indra (one of the hindu deity) gives battle against the king and his assistant that happened in Tampak Siring and the king mayadenawa is gone and disappeared. King Mayadenawa has also created poisonous pool which causes the team of bathara Indra die and faint after drinking this water. Then, bathara Indra stick his weapon and finally the water emerges so that it is called Tirta Empul. And then, the water is passed to the dead and faint soldier to make them alive back.

Therefore, this pool water is sanctified by the Hindu society in bali and they believe that this water can heal various deaseas. This place is visited by a lot of Hindu people to do a ritual and sanctify themselves. This place has been also opened for public as a famous tourist destination in Bali.
